How to Use the Betting Odds Calculator

The betting odds calculator tells you what a single bet pays before you place it. It works with every odds format and in two directions:

  1. Choose your odds format — American (-110, +150), decimal (1.91, 2.50) or fractional (10/11, 6/4). The choice is saved for all CalcVault betting calculators.
  2. Pick a mode. I know my stake works out what a stake wins. I know what I want to win works out the stake you need for a target profit, the way US sportsbooks quote "risk $110 to win $100".
  3. Enter the odds and the stake (or the amount to win).

The result shows:

  • Total payout — what comes back if the bet wins, stake included;
  • Profit — the "to win" figure, payout minus stake;
  • Implied probability — the chance the price assumes, which is also your break-even win rate;
  • the same odds in all three formats;
  • a quick table of profit and payout for stakes from $10 to $1,000 at those odds.

Share results copies a link with the odds, mode and amount, so a friend or a betting forum sees exactly the same numbers.

The Formula

Every format is first turned into decimal odds D, the total return per 1 staked:

  • American, positive: D = A ÷ 100 + 1 · American, negative: D = 100 ÷ |A| + 1
  • Fractional n/d: D = n ÷ d + 1

From the stake

  • Payout = stake × D
  • Profit = stake × (D − 1)

The same rules in American terms: at +A you win A for every 100 staked, and at −A you stake A to win 100.

From the amount to win

Stake = amount to win ÷ (D − 1), and the payout is the stake plus that amount. At -110, D − 1 = 0.909, so winning $100 takes a $110 stake.

Implied probability

Implied probability = 1 ÷ D × 100%. A bet only makes money in the long run if it wins more often than this. A sportsbook's prices include its margin, so the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market add up to more than 100% — at -110 on both sides, 104.76%.

Favourites and underdogs

Odds shorter than evens (below 2.00, negative American, fractions under 1/1) mark a favourite: the profit is smaller than the stake and the implied probability is above 50%. Odds longer than evens mark an underdog: the profit is larger than the stake and the implied probability is below 50%. At exactly evens (2.00, +100, 1/1) the profit equals the stake.

Why a sportsbook may show a slightly different figure

Sportsbooks round payouts to the cent, and a price shown as 1.91 may really be -110 (1.909…), so a payout can differ from this calculator by a few cents. Larger gaps usually mean the price moved before the bet was accepted, a maximum payout limit applies, or a promotion such as a profit boost changed the odds — check the bet slip for the final price.

Practical Examples

Example 1 — $110 on a -110 spread

  • D = 100 ÷ 110 + 1 = 1.909
  • Profit: $100.00 · Payout: $210.00
  • Implied probability: 52.38% — you need to win more than 52.38% of -110 bets to come out ahead

Example 2 — $50 on a +240 underdog

  • D = 240 ÷ 100 + 1 = 3.40
  • Profit: $120.00 · Payout: $170.00
  • Implied probability: 29.41%

Example 3 — £20 at 5/2

  • D = 5 ÷ 2 + 1 = 3.50
  • Profit: £50.00 · Return: £70.00
  • Implied probability: 28.57%

The calculator labels amounts in dollars; the arithmetic is the same in any currency.

Example 4 — To win $100 at -150

  • D − 1 = 100 ÷ 150 = 0.667
  • Stake needed: $150.00 · Payout: $250.00
  • Implied probability: 60.00%

Example 5 — $25 at decimal 1.80

  • Profit: $20.00 · Payout: $45.00 · Implied probability: 55.56%

Frequently Asked Questions

Convert the odds to decimal and multiply by your stake. $100 at +150 is 100 × 2.50 = $250 back, of which $150 is profit. $110 at -110 is 110 × 1.909 = $210 back, $100 profit.

Negative American odds show how much you stake to win $100. At -110 you risk $110 to win $100, so a winning bet pays $210 in total. The extra $10 is the bookmaker's commission, often called the vig or juice.

Positive American odds show the profit on a $100 stake. At +200 a $100 bet wins $200 and pays $300 in total. The implied probability is 100 ÷ 300 = 33.33%.

Payout (or return) is everything you get back on a winning bet, including your stake. Profit (or 'to win') is the payout minus the stake. Decimal odds describe the payout per unit; American and fractional odds describe the profit.

Only when you compare it with your own estimate. The implied probability is the win rate at which the bet breaks even. If you believe the true chance is higher, the bet has positive expected value; if lower, it loses money in the long run. The bookmaker's margin is built into the implied probability.
