How to Use the Stop Loss Calculator

Start by entering your account size in USD and setting your risk percentage using the slider. Most professional traders risk between 0.5% and 2% per trade — the slider defaults to 1%.

Enter your entry price and select the trade direction (Long for buy trades, Short for sell trades). Input the pip value per lot for your currency pair ($10 for most USD-quote major pairs, ~$9.1 for USD/JPY at current rates) and your lot size.

Click Calculate Stop Loss to see your exact stop loss placement in pips and price levels, plus a table of take profit prices for 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2, and 1:3 risk:reward ratios so you can plan your entire trade before entering.

The Formula

The stop loss calculator uses the following formulas:

  • Dollar Risk = Account Size × (Risk % ÷ 100)
  • Stop Loss (pips) = Dollar Risk ÷ (Pip Value per Lot × Lot Size)
  • Stop Loss Price (Long) = Entry Price − (Stop Loss Pips × 0.0001)
  • Stop Loss Price (Short) = Entry Price + (Stop Loss Pips × 0.0001)
  • Take Profit Price (Long) = Entry Price + (Stop Loss Pips × R:R × 0.0001)

For example: $10,000 account, 1% risk = $100. Pip value $10, 0.5 lots. Stop Loss pips = $100 ÷ ($10 × 0.5) = 20 pips. For a long entry at 1.0850: SL = 1.0830, TP at 1:2 = 1.0890.

Practical Examples

Example 1 — EUR/USD Long at 1.0850

  • Account: $10,000 | Risk: 1% = $100
  • Pip Value: $10 (EUR/USD standard) | Lot Size: 0.5
  • Stop Loss = $100 ÷ ($10 × 0.5) = 20 pips
  • SL Price = 1.0850 − 0.0020 = 1.0830
  • TP at 1:2 = 1.0850 + 0.0040 = 1.0890 ($200 potential profit)

Example 2 — GBP/USD Short at 1.2650

  • Account: $5,000 | Risk: 2% = $100
  • Pip Value: $10 | Lot Size: 0.5
  • Stop Loss = $100 ÷ ($10 × 0.5) = 20 pips
  • SL Price = 1.2650 + 0.0020 = 1.2670
  • TP at 1:3 = 1.2650 − 0.0060 = 1.2590 ($300 potential profit)
