How to Use the Each Way Bet Calculator

The each-way bet calculator shows your potential return in every possible outcome when you place an each-way bet on horse racing. An each-way bet is actually two separate bets of equal size: one bet on your horse to win, and one bet on your horse to place (finish in the top 2, 3, or 4 depending on field size).

Enter three values to get your full breakdown:

  1. Each-Way Unit Stake — this is the amount for each of the two bets. A £5 each-way bet costs £10 in total (£5 win + £5 place).
  2. Win Odds (Decimal) — the decimal odds offered for the horse to win. Convert fractional odds by adding 1: 9/1 becomes 10.0, 5/2 becomes 3.5.
  3. Place Fraction — the fraction of the win odds applied to the place bet. Most bookmakers offer 1/4 odds for standard races, 1/5 for big handicaps, and 1/3 for small fields of 3–4 runners.
  4. Number of Places— how many finishing positions are paid. Check your bookmaker's race card or terms for the specific race.

The calculator instantly returns all three outcome scenarios: if the horse wins, if it places without winning, and if it loses entirely.

The Formula

Each-way bet maths is straightforward once you break it into its two component bets:

  1. Define variables:
    • U = unit stake (half the total outlay)
    • W = decimal win odds
    • F = place fraction (e.g. 0.25 for 1/4)
  2. Win part return:
    Win Return = U × W
(Standard back bet: stake returned plus profit at full odds.)
  3. Place part return:
    Place Return = U × ((W − 1) × F + 1)
(The place bet pays a fraction F of the profit element of the win odds, plus the stake back.)
  4. Scenario outcomes:
    • Horse wins: Total Return = Win Return + Place Return; Profit = Total Return − 2U
    • Horse places only: Total Return = Place Return; Profit = Place Return − 2U
    • Horse loses: Total Return = 0; Profit = −2U

Note: the profit calculation always subtracts 2U (both stakes), because win-only and place-only scenarios both cost the full each-way outlay — the win stake is simply lost in the places scenario.

Practical Examples

Example 1 — Classic Each-Way Bet at 9/1 (10.0 decimal)

You place a £5 each-way bet on a horse at 9/1 (10.0 decimal) in a 10-runner handicap. The bookmaker offers 3 places at 1/5 odds.

  • Total stake: £10 (£5 win + £5 place)
  • Win return: £5 × 10.0 = £50.00
  • Place return: £5 × ((10.0 − 1) × 0.20 + 1) = £5 × 2.80 = £14.00

Outcomes:

  • Wins: £64.00 return, +£54.00 profit
  • Places (2nd or 3rd): £14.00 return, +£4.00 profit
  • Loses: −£10.00

Example 2 — Short-Priced Favourite at 3/1 (4.0 decimal), 1/4 odds

You place a £10 each-way bet on a favourite at 3/1 (4.0 decimal) in a 7-runner race. The bookmaker offers 2 places at 1/4 odds.

  • Total stake: £20
  • Win return: £10 × 4.0 = £40.00
  • Place return: £10 × ((4.0 − 1) × 0.25 + 1) = £10 × 1.75 = £17.50

Outcomes:

  • Wins: £57.50 return, +£37.50 profit
  • Places (2nd): £17.50 return, −£2.50 loss
  • Loses: −£20.00

This illustrates a key pitfall: at short odds, placing without winning can still result in a small loss because the place return doesn't cover both stakes.

Understanding Place Terms by Field Size

Bookmaker place terms vary by the number of runners and the type of race. Standard UK rules:

  • 1–4 runners: Win only — no each-way betting available
  • 5–7 runners: 2 places paid, 1/4 odds
  • 8–15 runners: 3 places paid, 1/5 odds
  • 16+ runners: 4 places paid, 1/4 odds (some handicaps offer 1/5)

Always check your specific bookmaker's terms before placing, as these can vary — especially for special events like the Grand National or Cheltenham Festival, where bookmakers sometimes offer enhanced place terms (e.g. 5 or 6 places).
